The Imam you are praying behind is holding the mus'haf and reciting from it during taraweeh prayer... Is this allowed? Can you still pray behind him?
When we look at the time of the Prophet, those leading voluntary prayers are allowed to hold the mus'haf...
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explains and answers the question
Sure.
It is narrated in Sahih Bukhari that one of the servants of A'isha had not memorized the Qur'an, and so he would hold the mushaf in taraweeh and recite the Qur'an from there. Tarawih is not fardh prayer, so the rules are a bit lax. So, if the imam wishes to hold the mushaf and he wants to do that, it will not invalidate the salah. It will not diminish the rewards of the salah, and it is permissible to do.
No doubt, it is better to recite from memory as the way that the Muslims do. But there's no sin, there's no haraj, there's no harm if the imam holds the mushaf, and you may hold the mushaf as well in your private taraweeh prayer.
